Gilbert & Sullivan's hilarious courtroom farce
Part of The Little Greats

The glamorous Angelina brings a court case against her intended husband Edwin, who jilts her when he comes to the ghastly realisation that she bores him intensely. Unfortunately for Edwin, all of the members of the jury and even the judge have fallen for Angelina themselves. But what will happen to Edwin, her erstwhile intended? And will Angelina achieve her dream of walking down the aisle?

Every ounce of comic potential is mined from a ludicrous plot which is taken perfectly seriously by everyone caught up in it. With its brilliantly witty comic numbers, catchy tunes and a superb mock-operatic ensemble, Trial by Jury cemented a partnership that took British musical theatre by storm. It is cast entirely from the Chorus of Opera North who showcased their versatility in last year’s musical success, Into the Woods, in collaboration with the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

What you say

Ian Bond said ago

Whilst it is to be applauded that Opera North have turned to Gilbert and Sullivan again following their wonderful production of RUDDIGORE, there are two points about this that are causes for regret.

Firstly, why do Opera North feel the need to say that they are casting the opera from the chorus? This sounds like some sort of excuse. What is it about TRIAL BY JURY that they feel a need to do this, let alone tell the world in their advertising?

Secondly, one would hope that the publicity department at Opera North could actually get their facts right. TRIAL BY JURY was not the first Gilbert and Sullivan Opera - that honour goes to THESPIS produced at London's Gaiety Theatre on 26th December 1871, three years earlier.

Opera North response:

Hi Ian, We're thrilled to hear that you are looking forward to our production and that you enjoyed Ruddigore. We celebrate the fact that Trial By Jury is cast entirely from our Chorus, because they are a group of incredibly talented artists at the heart of our company. They took centre stage in Into The Woods last summer to great acclaim and we are proud that they take centre stage again this season. And again, thank you for your correction. We have since amended web copy and can only apologise. We hope you enjoy the production!

What the critics say

...all went according to plan, with Nicholas Watts shining in Edwin’s graceful aria and Jeremy Peaker proving himself a true Savoyard in the Judge’s satirical ballad.

Amy Freston sparkles and shimmies as Angelina, her light, clear voice utterly right for the role...Oliver Rundell conjures bright, fizzing colours from the Orchestra of Opera North.
